TRAVELLING IS FUN!

Objectives: - to develop pupils’ listening, speaking, writing and reading skills;
                 - to broaden pupils’ knowledge on the topic;
                 - to teach pupils to cooperate in pairs and group;
                 - to develop logical thinking;
                 - to widen students’ outlook.
Equipment: slides, multimedia board and chalkboard, a tape recorder, Window on Britain.
PROCEDURE
I. Introduction
T: Good morning, students! Glad to see you cheerful and smiling. Tell me, please, what is your motto?
Ps: I think, I can!
T: It is very interesting. Try to prove that you can do everything. How are you today on such a frosty winter day?
S1: I’m fine, thanks.
S2: Perfectly well!
S3: I am in a good mood!
T: I’m glad to hear that, but I know when the weather is dull and cloudy a lot of people feel depressed, under the weather! Do you know how to cheer them up?
S1: Cheer up!
S2: Relax!
S3: Don’t get upset!
S4: Take it easy!
S5: Better luck next time!
S6: It is not the end of the world!
S7: Things will come right!                                                                                     
S8: Don’t get excited!
S9: Never say die!
S10: Speak to your friend over the telephone and relax!
S1: I know new way of cheering up. They are funny.
T: What are they?
S1: When you are in a bad mood look in a mirror and laugh as loudly as you can.
S2: Eat chocolate and sweets as messily as a baby.
T: Thanks a lot for your advice. I see that you are in a good mood. And what do people usually do when they are in a good mood?
S3: They give compliments to each other.
T: I agree with you. Let’s begin with me. Natasha, you look wonderful today!
N: Thank you. The same to you. Nastya, I like your hair-do.
N: Thank you for saying so. Valera, your new sweater is so smart.
V: It’s very nice of you to say so. Ira, your English is much better now.
 I: I’m happy to hear it from you. Vlad, I like your haircut.
V: Thanks for the compliment. Dasha, it’s a pleasure to work with you.
D: I must say the same to you! Yana, I like the way you smile!
Y: Thanks for the compliment. Natasha, You’ve made much progress in your studying English.
N: I’m glad you like it. Ira, you look great and fresh.
I: Yes, it’s really so, because last weekend I went to Vodyanyky and had a great time there.
N: Oh, it’s great! I’m fond of travelling too.
T: Ira and Natasha are fond of travelling in our group. Why do people travel?
S1: Travelling is always fun. We meet new people, visit new places, and get a lot of impressions.
S2: We get to know more about art, music, famous people. We become more educated.
S3: Travelling makes us friendlier.
S4: It develops our imagination.
S5: Many people travel in search of health.
T: All people are fond of travelling. They travel for different reasons. Some travel because it’s their hobby, some on business, some to visit their relatives who live far away. In any case it’s always interesting to travel. Today we’re going to speak about travelling. We’ll read, review useful vocabulary, we’ll talk about advantages and disadvantages of travelling. We have a lot to do.
II.Warming-up
P1: I like to travel by train and I always buy tickets.
P2: I’m crazy about hiking and I always take a rucksack.
P3: I left my luggage at the luggage locker.
P4: Travelling is impossible without a picnic.
P5: When I travel I usually arrive at the station in advance.
P6: My dad buys me perfume at the duty-free shops.
T: Different people prefer to travel by different means. They can do it by tram, by car, by bus, on foot…(Slides1-9)
1)Pair work
T: How do you get to school? As for me I walk to school. Work in pairs ask and answer how do you get to school?
T: Is it a real pleasure for you to walk to school? As for me I can’t stand walking to school. And now make up two sentences using the constructions I love, like, can’t stand. Have a look at the screen.(Slide 10)

1.Reading 
Pre-reading
T: People travel not only on business they also travel for pleasure. Some people like exotic travelling and Austin Stevens is one of them. Stevens specializes in snakes and reptiles. He writes articles about animals. When he’s not travelling the world, Stevens lives in Namibia.
While-Reading
T: Look at the photo of  Austin Stevens on p.46. What does he do?
Ss: He finds snakes. He films them.
T:  Listen to the text, scan and read it.

T: If you want to know much nowadays you have an opportunity to travel around the world and go sightseeing. I have a pen-friend. He’s already visited many interesting places in the mountains. He’s crazy about mountain climbing. And this time he is going to visit Andes. Read a traveller’s plan before his trip to the Andes. Make sentences with already and yet. Have a look at the ex.11, p.47.

6. Speaking
T: We’ve just returned from the exciting trip from London. I see that London’s attracted your attention greatly. But while you are travelling there are some pros and cons. Work in two groups. The task was to prepare a three minute presentation about pros and cons of travelling. Look at the screen. We’ll start with travelling by car.
IV.Summing-up
T: Well, as we see travelling is always fun and exciting. I see that you know a lot about London. I think everybody wants to visit London and I hope in future we’ll have an opportunity to visit it. And now let’s sum up our today’s lesson. We did a lot of things and it’s high time to give and receive the compliments.
